This course focuses on landscape design that is inspired by and inclusive of nature and pertinent to ecological systems throughout New England. Landscape Architect Lisa Cowan will introduce essential design principles, and landscape designer and horticulturist Irene Barber will guide students through the process of site analysis, including interconnected landscape systems, topography, water movement, and other components that influence sustainable landscape design. Students will practice conceptual plot design in and out of class to exercise drafting skills and become more confident to design at home.
Class content will include environmentally sound design materials, native plant selection, planning for succession and transition, permeability vs. compaction, and more. Instruction will take place both in the classroom and outside on the Gardens’ grounds, using the property’s diverse setting to examine elements and applications of ecological landscape design.
